MA International Journalism

Masters students in Bute Park

Bute Park, an ideal filming location

Journalists today confront rapid change, as technologies make the media more accessible across frontiers and new concentrations of global media power shape them to commercial or political ends.

The scale, scope and speed of today’s media capabilities set them apart from those of any previous period. This course aims to enable students to understand these changes and their consequences for international journalism.

Who should apply?

The course is designed for aspiring journalists, for mid-career practitioners and for graduates wishing to deepen their understanding of journalism. It offers a mix of practice and theory; techniques and advanced academic study. This is particularly suited to any student with an international outlook.

Students come from all over the world for this one year course, which offers an exceptional opportunity to gain a perspective on the evolution of journalism in different media and in different countries.

Principal Aims of the Course

Student Satisfaction

"I really liked the international aspect of the course. You can be doing an assignment with people from China, India and America one day and find yourself having lunch with people from Poland and Norway the next.

"I also really like hands on approach, you're not just learning about journalism, but you're actually out there doing it."

Elfi Middelbeek - MA International Journalism 2009/10

"It is academically rich and rigorous. The diversity of backgrounds, of career paths, of educational histories is phenomenal. Cardiff has brilliant people, particularly lecturers who shape your understanding of issues to raise the bar in global journalism excellence.

"I want to encourage others to make the most of every opportunity they get while studying in Cardiff University."

Gregory Akall - MA International Journalism 2008/9
