Postgraduate Journalism Training

Broadcast, Magazine and Newspaper options

Cardiff's postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Masters in Journalism training is intensive, vocational and designed to prepare you for a successful UK media career, so why choose Cardiff?

Our graduates get jobs

At the end of your time with us, you’ll want to work. Our record speaks for itself. Last year 87% of our Diploma/MA students had jobs within six months of leaving. Employers trust the training we provide and we do our best to make sure you’re “a safe pair of hands” when you leave us. As you make the transition from postgraduate to journalist we’re there for you, offering advice and support as you apply for your first job.

Our reputation

We’ve been here for the past 42 years and over that time we’ve built up a strong reputation. As well as our vocational courses we have an MA in International Journalism programme that draws students from around the world – and a lively bunch of undergraduates. We attract top speakers to share their knowledge and experience and we have an unrivalled team of academics and researchers whose job it is to study the media.

Our former students

We’ve helped to launch the careers of hundreds of journalists. Many of our former students are now right at the top in newspaper, magazine and broadcast newsrooms across the UK and around the world. If you visit a newsroom, ask about us.

Our staff

Our teaching teams are committed and go the extra mile to make sure you’re taught well. You’ll get individual feedback and plenty of contact time with your tutors throughout your time at Cardiff. You’ll benefit from their wide experience within the industry and find that they keep in touch long after you’ve left.

Our access to newsmakers

Politicians, sports people, business leaders, the police – people know about us and that improves your chances of getting interviews and access to press conferences, locations etc. Cardiff is a busy city and the centre of government for Wales. There’s a lot going on and plenty of stories for you to cover.

Our placements

As well as day placements during the course, you’ll spend the Easter holiday on an extended stay in a working newsroom. We can help to set your placements up and we do our best to get you to the organisations where you want to work.

Our practical teaching

Right from the start we’ll have you writing, interviewing and learning the key skills you’ll need as a journalist. We make sure you get plenty of time acquiring the software and equipment skills that the industry demands. Whether it’s laying out a page on Quark or operating a Sony Z7 TV camera, you’ll learn how to do it. We’ll also make sure you get a thorough grounding in media law and can make sense of the way the UK is governed – from councils up.

Our friendly – and affordable – location

Cardiff is a big-hearted capital city. The 300,000 people who live here are used to welcoming people from all over the world and making them feel at home. And with every penny counting, you’ll find your money goes further: rent and food prices are all lower than you might think. Finally, when you have a weekend free (which won’t be often) you can choose mountains or beaches – we have both on our doorstep.

And finally

Cardiff's students benefit from a course that continues to meet the standards set by the three media industry accrediting bodies – the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and Periodicals Training Council (PTC).
