Preparing a proposal for research funding

Planning how you will manage your data at this stage will enable you to incorporate any potential costs into your application.

What do I need to follow?

Cardiff University has its own Research Governance Framework outlining the principles of good research practice. All members of staff and students involved in research at the University should adhere to this Framework.

The Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care has been drawn up by the Department of Health. It aims to ensure that all research undertaken within health and social care organisations conforms to a common set of standards. All research involving NHS resources must adhere to this Framework.

All the UK Research Councils and many other funders now have data policies in place.  Familiarising yourself with your funder's policy before you apply will ensure that you cover any data management planning requirements that they may have in your application. To find out more about your research funder's data policy check out the Digital Curation Centre's Summaries of UK research funders' data policies.

Help preparing your proposal

If your research will involve personal information about living individuals there may be ethical and Data Protection considerations that you need to take into account.

Cardiff University's FAQs on Data Protection and Writing a Research Protocol or Applying for Research Ethics Approval provide help and advice about handling personal data. You can also find information on the University's Data Protection advice for researchers, and Staff Guide to Managing Patient Identifiable Data.

The University also provides training on managing research data for staff and students which is available through the University's Human Resources Staff Development Programme and University Graduate College Programme.

The Archaeology Data Service has some Guides to Good Practice on topics including Planning for the Creation of Digital Data.

Managing and Sharing Data: Best practice for Researchers (3rd Ed, 2011) (pdf) from the UK Data Archive provides an introduction to data management planning, data formats, metadata, data storage, data sharing and legal and ethical issues.
