EASL - Educational Awards in Sierra Leone

There has been a partnership between the University of Sierra Leone and Cardiff University since 1999. An educational fund was instigated in 2001 within Information Services to provide support for school children in the country's capital, Freetown. The fund was registered as EASL with the Charity Commissioners in 2010.

Although all children in Sierra Leone are now entitled to a free primary school education, for a secondary school education families have to pay fees as well as uniform, books, other equipment and exam costs.  Many families simply can't afford to send their children to school and less than one in five children currently have this opportunity. These educational awards make a real difference.

Awards go directly to the families with amounts of approximately £35-45 per student depending on the year of study.  Awards are prioritised for the secondary education of children who have completed their primary education in a state-funded school and may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend or to complete secondary school.

Donations from Cardiff University are made each summer in time for the new school year.  Funds are raised by the EASL Charity and administered by staff at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone.

Donations can be made to the fund via its Just Giving web page from June-July and November-December each year. Cheques (payable to EASL) can be sent at any time to Rosemary Soper, Archie Cochrane Library, Llandough Hospital, Penarth, CF64 2XX.

Donations can also be made at any time by text message with JustTextGiving, up to a maximum donation of £10. Text the EASL code, EASL11, followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070 - eg EASL11 £10. You will be prompted by text message to allow Gift Aid to be reclaimed.

For further information, please contact Rosemary Soper (Soper@cardiff.ac.uk) or Alison Weightman (WeightmanAL@cardiff.ac.uk).  Please let us know when you have made a donation since we would love to send you a personal 'thank you' and news of the students you are supporting.
