Calendar of State Papers (Foreign) (1547-1595)

The Calendar contains reports of foreign ambassadors to England and correspondence to and from the Tudor monarchs, privy councilors and others. They include: correspondence with English diplomats abroad and foreign diplomats in England; original and draft treaties; letters between heads of state; intercepted dispatches and other intelligence; and working papers of the Secretaries of State. The volumes held by the Library cover the years 1547-1595 and are useful for both foreign and domestic policy especially in relation to France and Scotland under Elizabeth. Together with the Calendar of Documents Relating to Scotland the volumes for the period are essential for understanding the life of Mary Queen of Scots. (28 volumes, published 1861-1863, 6 volumes, published under the title List and Analysis of State Papers Foreign, 1964-1993).
