Edward Thomas book collection (19th- 20th C.)

The collection consists of books by and about the essayist and poet Edward Thomas (1878-1917), including his family’s personal collection of books and maps, containing personal annotations. Holdings include first and limited editions of Edward Thomas’ works and editions of works in which Thomas was editor, introducer, or contributor. Some volumes have Thomas’ inscriptions to his wife Helen and to others, and Helen Thomas’ inscriptions.

The collection is complemented, if not overshadowed, by the world’s largest Edward and Helen Thomas archive, consisting of original letters, holograph letters and copies, book review, essays, articles and poems, and personal artefacts. The book collection and the archive form a unique integrated resource for research about Edward Thomas’s era, life and work.

Date range: late 19th-20th century.

Significance: Of international significance.

Size: c. 300 volumes. The archive consists of 4,000 letters to and from friends and family, 2,000 reviews, 500 photographs and 300 poetry manuscripts, as well as notebooks, diaries and other personal effects.
