An eminent epidemiologist, David Bainton was a former senior lecturer at the Centre for Applied Public Health Medicine, University of Wales College of Medicine and honorary consultant in public health medicine, Gwent Health Authority. He trained in social medicine with Jerry Morris, Director of the MRC’s Social Medicine Unit, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and in epidemiology with Archie Cochrane at Cardiff.

The David Bainton Archive consists of a range of professional papers, correspondence, photographs, survey results and journal articles. It includes material relating to the Caerphilly and Speedwell Collaborative Heart Disease Studies and the Barry Gallstone Survey. The material reflects his diverse interests, including his passionate concern for environmental issues.

The Archive is a significant addition to the recently established Centre for the History of Evaluation in Healthcare (CHEHC) where it joins the Cochrane Archive. The archive serves as a valuable resource to students and scholars interested in the history of evaluative approaches to healthcare and of evidence-based practice.
