Learning Resources Support Service for Cardiff Business School academic staff

Welcome to the Learning Resources Support Service web page, where you will find information and guidance on submitting authorisation requests for the scanning of reading materials for posting on Learning Central, as well as details of how to obtain copyright advice and order Harvard Business Publishing learning resources.

Digitisation and copyright service for teaching staff

The Learning Resources Support Service (LRSS) is based in the Aberconway Library and supports teaching staff in the digitisation of reading materials for Learning Central and provides relevant copyright advice for reproducing learning resources. With students now having high expectations of course materials being available on Learning Central, the Business School is the first in Cardiff University to offer a copyright authorisation service for its teaching staff.

The service seeks to remove from academics the time burden, responsibilities and complexities surrounding copyright law and licences and gaining appropriate permissions to reproduce reading materials. We can also upload links to eBooks and eJournal articles on Learning Central, which take students directly to the online resource.

The five key parts of the service are:

1. Authorising scanning and photocopying

It is a requirement of our Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Higher Education Licence that all scanned reading materials for uploading to Learning Central are authorised by a Designated Person. This means that we are breaching the terms of our key licence if teaching staff haven’t obtained authorisation for the scanning of reading materials.

The Aberconway Library Learning Resource Officer (LRO), Scott Pryor, is the Designated Person for the Cardiff Business School, therefore all requests for learning resources, such as book chapters and journal articles, that teaching staff would like scanned for Learning Central must come through him.

For scanning requests, please send us:

  • the module code and title
  • the number of students on the module
  • the book / journal title and any names of authors / editors
  • the book chapter title and, if relevant, the author's name
  • the edition / year or volume / issue number
  • the page range.

Alternatively, a scanning request form is available to download from this web page. Once approved, we will arrange for the learning resources to be scanned.

2. Ensuring copyright compliance

A key part of the service is to ensure copyright compliance when reproducing learning resources through both photocopying and scanning (please note that mass photocopying should still be done through the photocopying service in CARBS). Copyright checks on reading materials either scanned or photocopied for teaching and learning will be carried out on your behalf.  It is vital not only to ensure that what is copied is legal, but also to record details of every resource scanned and send them to the CLA annually as a key requirement of the licence.

3. Providing advice and guidance on copyright issues

If you have any queries about what you can and cannot reproduce, whether it be website content, how much you can copy from a book, journal or newspaper or the educational use of television broadcasts, then please contact Scott Pryor. For general copyright guidance please see our copyright web pages.

4. Providing Learning Central support

After the learning resources have been scanned, we can upload the PDF or links to electronic resources in a location of your choice on Learning Central. Alternatively, they can be emailed to you to upload yourself. The service also provides basic assistance with any Learning Central queries, such as help with structuring the home page, creating tutorial sign-up groups and discussion forums.

5. Ordering Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) resources and products

This is an exciting new development for 2013-14 and means that from 1st July 2013 teaching staff in CARBS will have access to a host of HBP resources, such as Business Cases and Harvard Business Review articles. If you wish to order any such resources, or enquire about additional products such as business simulations and tutorials etc., please contact us.

Copyright guidance

Please be aware that under the terms of the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Photocopying and Scanning Licence that is held by Cardiff University, we are able to scan one chapter or 5% (whichever is greater) of any one book per module, a copy of which the library must own in printed form.  If the book is also available in the library in electronic form then we are unable to scan and create a PDF: instead we can provide a direct link which will take students directly to the e-version.

The same terms apply to the scanning of journal articles (one article per issue or 5%, whichever is greater). In addition, it will be necessary for us to check that the resources you are requesting to be scanned are not published in specific international territories and are not on the CLA List of Excluded Categories/Works.

For general copyright guidance please see the Information Services copyright web pages or contact Scott Pryor with any specific queries.
