Wireless Network Services
Cardiff University offers three wireless services. For staff and students, CU-WiFi and an enhanced service, eduroam, is available.
Guests to the University may be entitled to use the guest wireless service, CU-Guest-WiFi
CU-WiFi
Please note: This service is only available to Cardiff University Staff and Students
This service provides very basic, unencrypted access to the World Wide Web. Data is passing between your laptop and the wireless network so it is possible for unscrupulous hackers to see this data.
eduroam is the preferred wireless service as it has many benefits over CU-WiFi including added security.
Information on how to connect to the wireless network securely using the "eduroam" wireless network is available on the wireless connection pages.
"CU-WiFi should only be used as a last resort if your device is not able to use eduroam due to technical incompatibilities.
eduroam (Janet Roaming)
Please note: This service is only available to Cardiff University Staff and Students and members of other institutions that participate in the Janet Roaming Service.
eduroam is an enhanced wireless service which has enhanced network security and requires certain features to be available or hardware installed on the wireless device.
Users are authenticated securely via their usual Cardiff University username and password via a wireless 802.1x supplicant which must be installed on the device. More information on the setup and configuration of eduroam can be found on the 'how to connect' pages.
Members of Cardiff University who have registered for wireless can take advantage of the National and International eduroam federation. This means that users who visit other participating institutions will be able to use their Cardiff username and password to access their wireless services. CU-Guest-WiFi
CU-Guest-WiFi is a restricted service which is intended for users who are not eligible to use either the CU-WiFi or eduroam services.
