Cardiff Secure Remote Access Service
The Cardiff University Secure Remote Access service is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service. It creates a secure tunnel between your computer and the Cardiff University network.
Put simply, it allows you to access resources on the Cardiff University network from the public Internet that are only normally accessible from on-campus.
The primary purpose of the Secure Remote Access service is to enable research and school IT support staff to securely access research or school IT systems that are only available when using a machine connected to the campus network.
It is not intended to give access to email, home and shared drives - for access to these resources, please see the Cardiff Portal Help pages.
Please note: In order to use this service, you must have your University account enabled to access the Secure Remote Access service. Staff and research postgraduate accounts are enable by default.
A supported VPN client is available for the following operating systems.
Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit)
Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit)
Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit)
Mac OS X 10.6 (32 and 64 bit)
Mac OS X 10.7 (32 and 64 bit)
Mac OS X 10.8 (32 and 64 bit)
Getting started guides for these operating systems together with guides for Windows XP, Linux, Apple iPhone and iPad, and Android are also available from the IT Help pages.
Please note that there are some limitations to what is and isn't accessible when using the Secure Remote Access service. For more information, view the Frequently Asked Questions page.
