Cardiff Campus Manager Troubleshooting Guide

The Residences Local Area Network (RESLAN) uses a web-based internet access system (Cardiff Campus Manager) to manage the connection in your room. You should see the initial registration page, assuming that you've followed the How To Connect To RESLAN guide

If you are not directed to the Cardiff Campus Manager registration pages, please try each of the following steps and retry your connection after completing each step:

Access an external website

When you initially try to connect to RESLAN, you will not yet be registered to do so. To access the internet, you will need to complete the registration process, a part of which is to scan your computer for a supported operating system and approved anti-virus software.

To view the registration pages, you need to connect your computer to the network using the provided green ethernet cable.  After at least a full 60 seconds, open your Internet browser and try to access a non-Cardiff web page (for example www.bbc.co.uk or www.google.com).  If you do not see the registration pages, please try another external web site.  If this also fails, try the next step:

Ensure your computer is set to receive an IP address via DHCP

All RESLAN connections have their IP addresses automatically assigned by a server.  It is strictly prohibited to use a fixed IP address on a RESLAN connection.  It may well be, however, that you have needed to use a fixed IP address before coming to Cardiff, and this may need to be removed before you can register on RESLAN.  In order to ensure your computer is set to receive an automatic IP address, please choose the appropriate option below:

Please note: Microsoft is withdrawing support for Windows XP from 8th April 2014. Find out more...

  • Under the "Network and Sharing Centre" section, choose "View network status and tasks"
  • Click "Manage network connections" (located to the left of the window)
  • Right-click "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties" (you may be prompted to click "Continue" at this point)
  • Un-tick all of the following options:
    • Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
    • Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper (I/O Driver)
    • Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder
  • Click OK

Temporarily disable your firewall

If you are not able to view the Cardiff Campus Manager webpages, or if you are having a problem with the scan of your computer, you may need to temporarily disable your Internet firewall.

If you are using the standard Windows firewall, this can be disabled from the Control Panel option ("Security" and "Windows Firewall" in Windows Vista).

If you are using a third party firewall, such as McAfee Firewall or Norton Internet Security, please consult your manual for information on how to disable these products.

Try your computer in another room

To eliminate a problem with the network outlet in your room, we require that you test your computer in another RESLAN outlet.

Simply follow the steps in the How to connect to RESLAN guide using a different RESLAN outlet

If your computer doesn't work in another RESLAN outlet, you may need to book an appointment with a technician to investigate further.

If your computer does work in another RESLAN outlet, you will need to contact the Information Services IT Service Desk on 029 2087 4487.
