How To Connect to RESLAN

The Residences Local Area Network and Wireless Service (RESLAN) utilises a web-based Internet access system (Cardiff Campus Manager) to manage the connection in your room. This system will ensure that your computer meets the minimum security requirements in order to connect.

It is now possible to register for RESLAN via the wired or wireless connection from your room.

In order to connect to RESLAN, your computer must meet the following criteria:

  • You must have a licensed, supported operating system. Supported operating systems include:
    • Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    • Apple Operating Systems 10.6 and above
    • Most Linux systems
  • Your operating system must be patched with the latest service packs and security updates
  • You must have an up-to-date, supported anti-virus program

You can also connect and register wireless enabled mobile devices from RESLAN.

  • Phones and Tablet devices capable of supporting PEAP or TTLS protocols will be able to connect to eduroam from Residences. If you are unable to register your mobile device successfully help is available at the IT Clinic or the Julian Hodge Study Centre.
  • Mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads Android phones and Tablet Devices do not require anti virus software to connect.
  • It is not possible to connect and register a Wireless Printer to eduroam as printing devices do not support the necessary security protocols PEAP and TTLS.
  • Requests to register games consoles should be directed to the Gaming Society.  Regrettably, INSRV is not able to offer support for online games or consoles on  the RESLAN or UNIVERSITY network.

Connecting via Wireless

You will need your Cardiff Username and Password to complete the RESLAN registration

These instructions should enable you to get to the Residences Wireless (eduroam) self registration pages.  If you are unable to do this, or if you fail the registration checks and still cannot connect after taking corrective measures, you may need to book an appointment with Information Services staff (see below).

When you have successfully completed the registration process you will be registered for use on both the RESLAN Wireless and the University’s Campus Wireless network.

This is a two stage process:

  1. -   Configure your wireless device for eduroam using XpressConnect
  2. -   Test and Register your wireless device with the wireless network via Cardiff Campus Manager

A - To Register on a Wireless Network Connection

1.       Ensure your wireless network device is turned on.

2.       Connect to the wireless network broadcasted as "eduroam-setup" in residences locations.

3.       Try to access an external website

Open your Internet browser and access a non-Cardiff web page (for example www.bbc.co.uk or www.google.com).  If you do not see the XpressConnect registration page, please try another external web site.  It is important to type in the address fully and manually.  Do not select an auto filled address that is pre-selected and offered by the browser.  You may also need to refresh the page several times.

4.       Follow the instructions which will ask for your Cardiff Username and password and then ask you to press continue.

5.       Your device will be configured for eduroam and will automatically switch to eduroam from eduroam-setup

6.       Now go to section B Cardiff Campus Manager (CCM) Registration to complete the process.

B - Cardiff Campus Manager (CCM) Registration

1.       Open an Internet browser and follow the instructions.

You should be automatically directed to the Cardiff Campus Manager Registration pages on the eduroam network.  Your device will be checked that it meets the minimum security requirements to connect to the network.  Should your device fail any of these requirements, you will be allowed only very limited access to the Internet, purely to rectify the problem.

Connecting via Network Cable

Before powering your computer on, please ensure that the green network cable (provided) is securely connected to both your computer and the outlet in your room.

Once your computer has started up, please wait a full 60 seconds and then launch a web browser.  If you are not directed straightaway to the Cardiff Campus Manager registration pages, please try to access a non-Cardiff University web page or a web page that is not cached (for example www.123456.com)

If you are still not directed to the registration pages, please see the troubleshooting guide for help.

Registration

The first time you connect your computer to Cardiff Campus Manager, you will be asked to register your computer for use within the RESLAN network. Your computer will be checked to see it meets the minimum security requirements to connect to the network.  Should your computer fail any of these requirements, you will be allowed only very limited access to the Internet, purely to rectify the problem.

You will need to know your Cardiff University Network Username and Password to complete registration.  If you are a new student, you will already have been made aware of these details, as part of the online enrolment process.  If, for any reason, you have not received them, you should contact the enrolment team by ringing 029 2087 6211.  If you have forgotten your password, please visit either any Cardiff University library or Information Services 41 Park Place and ask for it to be reset - remember to take your University ID card with you, so that this can be done.

Upon completion, please wait at least 1 hour for your registration to be processed and allow you full access to the Internet.

Using Cardiff Campus Manager

Occasionally, we may require that your computer is re-checked; this is to ensure that your computer is still receiving automatic security and anti-virus updates.  During this period, your computer will be placed in a quarantine zone and need to be re-scanned.  Whilst your machine is in quarantine, you will only be allowed very limited access to the Internet, i.e. you will only be able to access anti-virus and security update sites. Once your computer has been checked and verified to be secure, you will released from quarantine and allowed access to the Internet once again.

If at any time your computer is deemed to be a threat to other users on the network, you will be completely blocked from using the Internet, sometimes without any prior warning.

However you will be advised by an email sent to your Cardiff address that you have been blocked from the Reslan network

Testing Your Computer

You may test your computer to see if it will pass the minimum security requirements to connect to the network by running the Campus Manager Online Test
