The Clinical Skills Lab (CSL) - Rooms 1.17a/b

Student contact with real patients in hospital clinics and wards is central to medical, nursing and healthcare training. However, with changes in healthcare delivery - fewer beds, shorter stays in hospital - clinical skills training is becoming more difficult to provide.

It is now recognised that many of the complex and invasive techniques used in diagnosis and treatment are best learnt and practised in a safe environment away from clinical areas. Many clinical procedures can now be simulated to allow high levels of proficiency to be acquired before students are required to practice on real patients.

The CSL provides realistic models for the teaching and practice of skills such as:

  • IM/IV injection
  • Blood pressure and vital signs
  • Urinalysis
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Phlebotomy
  • Aseptic techniques
  • IV cannulation and infusion
  • Airway management
  • CPR
  • Urethral catheterisation
  • Suturing
  • Arterial blood sampling
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Asepsis
  • Chest drain
  • Nasogastric feeding
  • Eye examination
  • Ear examination

Harvey

Harvey is a state-of-the-art cardiovascular diagnosis patient simulator. He is a life-like model "with a heart" that allows students to examine the total cardiovascular system. Students can practice their clinical skills, e.g. auscultating heart sounds, palpating the left ventricular impulse, and taking blood pressure. Harvey has a large number of diseases that can be "turned on and off" with the push of a button. Thus, students can practice their diagnostic skills without risk to patients.

The British Heart Foundation has generously arranged for the installation of Harvey at some twenty Medical Schools throughout the UK, including Cardiff University. Anyone interested in finding out more about Harvey, particularly regarding his educational use/potential can contact Tim James on Tel: 029 206 87770.

These facilities are available to Years 3, 4 and 5 medical students on a self-directed learning basis.

When booking this facility on Tel: 029 206 87771, please give at least one week's notice.
