Off-Campus Access to Electronic Resources
Staff and students registered on the Cardiff University computing network can access many of the University's electronic resources off-campus with their Cardiff University login (username and password).

When you have found the electronic resource you want to access, click on the link to the resource.
- Electronic journals can be accessed from the eJournal portal. Upon choosing a journal, select the link to the relevant journal provider for your chosen publication. You should then be prompted to login with your Cardiff University username and password.
- The eJournal portal is the quickest route into electronic journals, but you can also access them via Voyager, which will show you if there are print copies available
- eBooks can be accessed off-campus via Voyager
- When accessing a database from the Databases A-Z list make sure that you select the off-campus link
After you click on the link to a resource, you will be presented with the Cardiff University login page. This is unless you have previously logged in during the current session, in which case you should be taken straight to the publication, already logged in.
Enter your Cardiff University login (username and password) in the boxes and press login.
Instructions for accessing electronic resources from external websites
You will no longer be able to login to resources using the alternative login route on the Athens authentication page or via MyAthens, as Cardiff University have progressed on from using these services. Access for the majority of resources is now through the UK Access Management Federation route.
Step 1 : Look for the login option for the resource you are using. This login option will have different names according to the publisher/ provider of the resource. Look for login options the same as/similar to one of the following:
- Institutional Login
- Athens/Institutional Login
- Home Institution
- Shibboleth
- UK Federated Access Management
- UK Federation
- UK Access Federation
- Academic Users
Step 2: Select UK as your location – this may be listed as UK, UK Access Management Federation, or UK Federation.
Step 3: Select Cardiff University as your institution.
Step 4: Enter your Cardiff University Username and Password into the Cardiff University login box that appears.
Below is an example of using the steps above to login to Science Direct:
Step 1: Look for the login option – in Science Direct you should click on Athens/ Institution Login
Step 2: Select location – select UK Access Management Federation and click the ‘Go’ button
Step 3: Select institution – click on the Cardiff University link
Step 4: The Cardiff University login page will then appear. Enter your Cardiff University login (username and password) in the boxes and press login.
