Alerting services
These services alert you by email when new articles in your area or new issues of particular journals have been published.
ZETOC - A good starting point is ZETOC Alert - the British Library's Electronic Table of Contents database. It contains details of around 20,000 current journals in all major subject areas.
Blackwell Science: Synergy Register to access an alerting service containing over 850 journals.
Contents Direct: Elsevier Science Select the Alerts option to be sent details of Elsevier Science book and journal tables of contents.
Ingenta Connect Select Sign Up Here and set up New Issue or Search alerts.
Institute of Physics Publishing Select Create Account to set up alerts for Physics electronic journals.
Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) The service includes 30 Royal Society of Chemistry titles.
Sage Email Alerts Over 400 titles, mainly in Social Sciences and Humanities.
Informaworld Alert A table of contents alert, covering journal titles from Psychology Press, Routledge, and Taylor & Francis journals.
Social Science Research Network (SSRN) SSRN promotes the rapid worldwide dissemination of social science research and is composed of a number of specialized research networks in each of the social sciences. The SSRN networks publish submitted abstracts and they also solicit abstracts of research papers from around the world.
Keyword alerts
This type of alerting service emails you details of new journal articles on chosen subjects. Many of the databases we subscribe to at Cardiff offer this service. You can normally set up alerts by doing a search in the database and choosing the Save Search, Search History or Alerts options. Some databases, for example SCOPUS, give you the option to set up citation alerts, which tell you when a particular journal article has been cited by another author.

Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts provides references and summaries of articles covering:

It is updated daily and coverage is from 1987. ASSIA currently contains over 375,000 records from over 500 journals published in 16 different countries, including the UK and US.

British Humanities Index
Contains references relating to the humanities from articles in over 200 British journals and major newspapers from 1962 onwards. Subjects covered include:

EBSCO
Features the full text of over 3,600 publications including scholarly journals, trade publications and popular business magazines. It covers subjects such as:

Titles include Business Week, Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Fortune, The Economist and hundreds of peer- reviewed journals. The database also provides company profiles, EIU country economic reports, and DataMonitor market reports.

EMBASE
The Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE), is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database indexing over 3,500 international journals in the following fields: drug research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical engineering/instrumentation.
Coverage is from 1947 onwards. Access is via Ovid.

INSPEC
Lawtel
Lawtel provides summaries of case law and links to statutes, bills and command papers, personal injury quantum (including Kemp and Kemp Quantum Reports) and the Judicial Studies Board guidelines on general damages in personal injury cases. Lawtel is updated daily.

ScienceDirect
Access to the Elsevier Science journal collection (over 1,200 titles), along with titles from a number of other publishers and societies. Most titles are available in full text from 1995. The collection covers a wide range of scientific disciplines, including social sciences.

Sociological Abstracts

Web of Knowledge Service
This service provides access to the Web of Science databases:
- Arts & Humanities Citation Index
- Social Science Citation Index
- Science Citation Index
Covers over 8,500 scholarly research journals, including author abstracts, from 1981 to the present. Searchable by keyword or by works that have been cited by other publications.
Also includes the ISI Journal Citation Reports for the Sciences and Social Sciences. To access the Reports, login to Web of Knowledge and select the ISI Journal Citation Reports option from the home page. These provide easy access to data so scholarly journals can be compared. Categories include highest impact and most frequently cited journals.
