Use the databases below to:

  • find references to journal articles
  • keep up to date with the latest publications in your subject

Some databases require your Cardiff University network username and password for off-campus access. These databases are available for all staff and students of Cardiff University but because of licensing restrictions they are not available to external members and visitors.

You can also access databases through Electronic Resources - MetaLib

Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents (via Lexis®Library)

The Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents (EFP), which is held on Lexis®Library, is a database of electronic forms and precedents that is of use to practising solicitors and barristers.

European Sources Online

Previously called KnowEurope. ESO is an index to information sources about Europe, focusing on the European Union and other pan-European organisations, the countries of Europe, and on the issues of importance to European citizens and stakeholders.

ESO provides full text access to publications, documents and web sites from the EU and other international organisations, national governments, thinktanks and stakeholder organisations. In addition, it includes full text articles from news sources, and bibliographic references to key academic textbooks and periodical articles. Information guides provide additional help in finding out about the policies and institutions of the European Union and European countries.

HeinOnline

Provides full text journal articles from over 1,000 law and law related journals (including UK and US law journals), the English Reports (cases decided in England and Wales from 1220 to 1865) and the Statutes of the Realm (legislation passed at Westminster between 1235 and 1713).

ICLR Online

The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting’s ICLR Online database contains all the case reports published by the ICLR since 1865 including, The Law Reports, Weekly Law Reports, Industrial Case Reports, Business Law Reports, and Public and Third Sector Law Reports. All ICLR’s case reports can also be accessed via Westlaw UK and LexisLibrary.

i-law.com provides electronic access to the full text of ebooks, law reports and journals published by Informa including, the i-law Maritime & Commercial database (which provides a range of ebooks and periodicals including Lloyd’s Law Reports and Lloyd's Maritime & Commercial Law Quarterly); Lloyd's Law Reports: Insurance and Reinsurance; Lloyds Reinsurance Law Reports and the Medical Law Reports.

Use the relevant username and password found on the electronic journal passwords page (Cardiff users only) page (along with your Cardiff University email address) to access the i-law Maritime & Commercial database or one of the other Informa titles.

Lawtel provides summaries of case law and links to statutes, bills and command papers, personal injury quantum (including Kemp and Kemp Quantum Reports) and the Judicial Studies Board guidelines on general damages in personal injury cases. Lawtel is updated daily.

Lexis®Library

Please Note: To carry out a search of newspaper articles you should use the Nexis database.

Provides full text law reports, legislation and journal articles from the UK, the European Union and the United States, in addition to the full text of Halsbury's Laws, the Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents, Atkin's Court Forms and some practitioner-focused personal injury and property law texts. LexisPSL is available providing practice notes, primary law, precedents, forms and commentary in over 20 practice areas

Lexis®Library also enables users to create e-mail subject alerts and scheduled search alerts. To create, edit, delete or automatically run an alert you must access Lexis®Library via the off-campus link using your Cardiff University (CU) Login.

From the first page, click to accept the Terms and Conditions to proceed to the database.

A comprehensive newspaper database, updated daily, providing full text access to all UK national newspapers, plus regional newspapers, international news providers and a number of trade journals and magazines. Most titles have a twenty year archive. UK newspaper titles include:

  • Financial Times
  • Daily Mail / Mail on Sunday
  • Independent / Independent on Sunday
  • Guardian / Observer
  • Daily Telegraph / Sunday Telegraph
  • Daily Mirror / Sunday Mirror
  • London Evening Standard
  • The Scotsman / Scotland on Sunday

In addition, 2300 international news providers are covered including The International Herald Tribune, The New Yorker, USA Today, India Today and the Japan Times.

The database also includes company data. Annual Reports are available for UK quoted companies as well as selected European, Asian and US companies. Financial information is provided by Extel Cards and Worldscope and the Directory of Directors provides details of 45,700 directors of UK Companies. Please be aware that this resource will only run on a Windows PC.

United Nations Treaty Collection

The United Nations Treaty Collection is the official database of the United Nations and includes:

  • The full text of over 150,000 bilateral and multilateral treaties
  • The status of over 500 major multilateral treaties deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations
  • The League of Nations Treaty Series (1920-1944)

House of Commons Parliamentary Papers

The House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP):

  • provides access to Bills, Command Papers and House of Commons Papers printed between 1801 and the 2003/04 session.
  • includes The Eighteenth Century Parliamentary Papers Collection from BOPCRIS which features publications published officially by the House of Commons or the House of Lords from 1688 to 1834, including sessional papers and other material such as Journals and Private Acts.
