BusinessObjects Online
What is BusinessObjects Online?
BusinessObjects provides pre-written reports to allow staff to see data from various University databases.
How does it work?
Pre-written reports have been designed in BusinessObjects and these can be “refreshed”, so that up-to-date data is brought into the report from University databases.
When you refresh a report, you will be asked some questions to define the data you want, eg School, Course, type of research award etc.
The majority of the BusinessObjects reports are based on Student Data from SIMS but there are others:
- RACDV – Research award data
- Compel – Staff data
- Cyborg – Salaries data
- LEARN SIMS– Lifelong Learning Student data
How would I find BusinessObjects useful?
Reports have been written to provide data in a useful format for staff throughout the university.
The types of reports which could be useful for staff in particular roles include:
- processing the admission of applicants
- providing lists of students on a course or module
- staff data for HR staff within Schools
- statistical data for planning, identifying trends etc
- obtaining data to produce mail merge letters or emails
- submitting exam results
Within the university some key business processes will assume you have knowledge of BusinessObjects, so you may find this essential for your role.
Do all staff see all the reports?
No, there are various levels of access which relate to the type of data required for your job role. Sensitive and confidential data will only be available to appropriate staff. Examples of data regarded as sensitive include:
- ethnic origin
- disability data
- care leaver status
- salary
- grade & spinal point
What does a BusinessObjects report look like?
Most reports show student or staff names, but for data protection reasons, the example below just shows statistics.
