Definitions / key to entitlements

Library Entitlements

Level 1 - members of the public

  • General public entry is allowed up to 9.30pm under normal circumstances, unless specific site restrictions apply;
  • Reference access to print, and non-digital materials only;
  • Access some digital materials via defined terminals under 'walk-in' user rights;
  • Simple enquiry and orientation;
  • Use of photocopiers (charges apply).

Level 2 - Associate 2 and 6


Alumni, Cardiff Libraries in Cooperation, Dental Technician Students (Cardiff Metropolitan and Cardiff and Vale UHB combined course), Honorary Title Holders, Mutual Students (Cardiff Metropolitan University, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama), NHS Wales (non-Cardiff and Vale UHB / Velindre NHS Trust), NHS Wales training grade Doctors and Dentists (non-Cardiff and Vale UHB / Velindre NHS Trust), Personal Membership, Pre-sessional Students, SCONUL (A, B, C), Welsh for Adults.


  • Services of level 1, plus:
  • Borrowing (levels as defined in schedule 1);
  • Reservations;
  • Use of Inter-Library Loans service (available for Personal Members and Alumni only - charges apply).

Level 3 - Staff and Students


Cardiff University staff and students, Cardiff and Vale UHB and Velindre NHS Trust staff, LEARN.


  • Services of level 1 and 2, plus:
  • Borrowing (levels as defined in schedule 1);
  • Extended enquiries;
  • Use of subscribed electronic journals and books (for licensing reasons, NHS Wales staff can only access electronic journals and books via defined terminals under 'walk-in' user access rights);
  • Use of networked computers and wireless network (available to Cardiff University members only);
  • Use of the Inter-Library Loans service (charges may apply);
  • Access to Information Literacy, and Information Skills training offered by Information Services;
  • Staff and students who have an illness, disability, or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia may be entitled to extended loans. 

IT Entitlements

Full - Full service to support academic and administrative / managerial activities, including access to the University Library e-resources.

Partial - Tailored service with facilities and access defined, and registration procedures defined separately. 

None - No IT entitlement.
