You Said, We Did Staff and Postgraduate Survey Results
In spring 2012, Information Services (INSRV) carried out a Survey for staff and research postgraduates.
Around 700 staff and research postgraduates responded, providing us with some very positive feedback on our services: 69% of those who responded think that we offer a good or very good service. High levels of satisfaction were noted with our enquiry and advice services, with our IT applications and for finding and obtaining books and journals in particular. INSRV staff also received very positive satisfaction ratings for their friendly, welcoming and professional approach.
You asked us to take a look at the following areas for improving our services:
- Improve the email system
- Improve issues with Learning Central
- Improve IT facilities across campus
- Improve Cardiff Portal services
- Provide easier access to eJournals and eBooks
- Improve our library collections
- Increase our opening hours
A decision has been made to replace the current email system with the new Office 365 service.
More information about Office 365 and plans and timescales for replacement can be found in the Connections Community (please note that you will need a Cardiff University username and password to access this Community).
Improve issues with Learning Central, particularly the perceived slowness of the system, and difficult to navigate interfaces
We have improved the Learning Central infrastructure to provide more resilience and to improve the speed of the applications and functions. This has made some significant improvements.
We are monitoring performance on an ongoing basis, and our log analysis has shown that the largest factor in performance is the network connection and /or the processing power of the PC being used. To enable us to investigate further, please let us know when you have problems by contacting the INSRV Service Desk. Please let us know your operating system, browser being used, where you were trying to access from and what task you were trying to perform, in order to enable us to better identify your issues.
A new user interface for Learning Central will be launched this summer 2012 and further details will be provided within Learning Central.
Improve IT facilities across campus, particularly the Pool Rooms, out-of-hours IT support and access to file storage
A review of the Pool Room facilities is currently underway; INSRV is working jointly with Estates to identify key issues and priorities for upgrades.
INSRV is developing and reviewing options for providing more out-of-hours IT support.
INSRV has increased the file storage available to users on the University network via the Home and Shared drives (H and S); providing a 10-fold increase in the amount of personal and shared file storage available to both staff and students on the Cardiff University network. If you require an increase in your file store please contact your Local Computing Representative.
A review of Cardiff Portal services is underway, and this will include remote file access. Remote access to your files is also easily available via https://home.cf.ac.uk.
The University Web Transformation Project will also deliver significant improvements to the way in which University web content is managed and delivered.
We are testing the new 'Library Search' service for accessing electronic resources – this is now available for you to try. Please try it out and let us know what you think.
'Library Search' will be fully launched in summer 2012.
We have received a 4.4% increase on our Library information resources budget for 2011/12, and a further 4% increase for 2012/13. We will be working with the University to identify further areas for investment.
We will be continuing with our extended opening hours in the libraries in 2012/13. You'll find up to date information on the opening hours web pages.
Thank you to all staff and research postgraduates who completed the survey this year and provided such valuable feedback.
