Supporting international collaboration

7 January 2011

INSRV's Heath Park videoconferencing unit recently supported LION (Live International Otolaryngology Network), a live surgical broadcast linking surgeons across the globe.

The annual LION event gives surgeons an opportunity to view live surgery in otology and neurotology as it takes place in other countries. Surgeons arrived at the Ty Dewi Sant videoconferencing studio from around Wales for the day long event and were able to take advantage of this invaluable technology and observe live surgery from France, Poland, Brazil and many other countries around the world.

This, the fifth year of the event, meant that surgeons from Cardiff were able to join with colleagues from as far afield as Pretoria to link to the LION TV hosted site, based in Utrecht, Netherlands. This host site then linked the surgeons to operating theatres worldwide so they could observe the surgery as it progressed in real time. The surgeons could then further their skills by taking part in the frequent question and answer sessions and panel discussions that ran throughout the day.

This year, Cardiff-based participants benefited from the newly installed HD equipment which enhanced the clarity of the image - a real benefit for viewing detailed surgical procedures.

The surgeons attending were also able to switch between channels and surgeries, in order to maximise their learning.
