University Library Service making an impact in Europe

18 January 2011

Erasmus group

The visiting international librarians with programme organiser Sonja Haerkoenen and Director of University Libraries Janet Peters.

Following on from a successful four-day knowledge exchange programme for international librarians during 2009, 2010 saw a repeat of the event and its extension to five days' duration.

The week was an opportunity for the international librarians to gain an insight into the British library system, and to gather new ideas for use within their own institutions. It was also a chance for Cardiff's librarians to discuss the different library experiences throughout Europe, which allowed visitors and hosts alike to participate in a truly international knowledge sharing experience.

The week covered a variety of topics, including information literacy, library buildings, library management and our European Documentation Centre, and highlighted Cardiff's recent innovations within Information Services.

Attendance almost doubled with eleven delegates from the Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, Spain, and Sweden – most of whom had secured funding via the Erasmus Staff Mobility Programme.

Feedback  was 100% positive, with comments such as:

"I would like to come back another year."

"Thank you for great organization … I will never forget this week!"

"It was my first time at Erasmus programme and now I'm encouraged enough to take a part again…"
