New students get off to a great start

The start of the academic year is one of the busiest times in the University calendar, and INSRV plays a central role working with colleagues throughout the University to ensure the smooth running of the enrolment process.

This year, 20,000 students enrolled online through the Cardiff University website in an easier and more streamlined process.

Registration on the Residences' Local Area Network (ResLAN) at enrolment saw almost 5,000 students take up this service, which enables students in the University's Residences to access the internet.

Peak use of the ResLAN service started when students began arriving in earnest on Wednesday 22nd September – during this day, 898 students successfully registered with the Network, more than double the 400 students who registered on the same day last year.

In a change from previous years, INSRV's ResLAN and enrolment support was this year focussed at the Julian Hodge Study Centre. This proved popular with students as they were able to have their queries addressed and issues solved in one place.

During registration, the popularity of hand-held devices was again illustrated, with over 1,100 iPhones or iPod Touchs registered for the University wireless systems. During this time, 81 BlackBerrys, and 760 other smart phones were also registered and can now access CU-WiFi, the Cardiff University wireless network.
