ARCCA reaches key user milestones
7 January 2011
During 2010, Advanced Research Computing @ Cardiff, ARCCA, reached a number of key milestones in its delivery of high performance and high-throughput computing services for University researchers.
ARCCA's services focus on the existing linux supercomputer, Merlin, and on Condor, a system which capitalises on unused PCs across the University campus. These resources are used when researchers require more computational power than available through their existing desktop on laptop computer.
- ARCCA now has over 250 users from 18 of Cardiff's Academic Schools.
- Over 2 million jobs have been run on Merlin, resulting in a sustained use of around 70%.
- Two new academic schools are also now using Merlin, having migrated from the Condor service.
To further support Cardiff researchers, ARCCA provides application support and a range of training courses, which are tailored to the researchers' needs. ARCCA's friendly staff have expertise across a spectrum of computational techniques ranging from computer simulation and modelling to manipulating and storing large amounts of data, skills which are used to assist researchers in solving problems that would be otherwise impossible.
