Please read through this document carefully as it will contain important information

 

Travel to Cardiff

For those travelling by train or coach, you will arrive at Cardiff Central Station.  National Express operates coaches with direct links from London’s Heathrow/Gatwick and Bristol Airports.  For further information please contact +44 (0) 8717 818178 or consult www.nationalexpress.com

The Cardiff-London Intercity service from London Paddington runs 15 minutes past and 15 minutes to the hour with a journey time of about 2 hours.  For further information please consult Train Travel Information or National Rail Travel

 

 

There is a taxi rank outside Cardiff Central Station.  The fare to Colum Hall in Colum Road will be approx £6.00 and takes about 10 minutes, traffic permitting, to the reception office at 130 Colum Road.  The fare to the other accommodation venue at Talybont will approx £7.00.  If you wish to book a taxi in advance please call 44+ (0)29 2087 3333 or email or book via the web Dragon Taxis

 

 

Cardiff International Airport www.cwlfly.com is 11 miles from the city centre and the cost via taxi to the main University campus is approximately £28.00.  Public transport also runs from the airport into the city.  For further information contact www.cardiffbus.com

Registration and Welcome Reception – Monday 22nd July 2013

This will take place in the Main Building, Cardiff University (No 39 on the map) from 18.00-21.00hrs

 

Conference Venue - Tuesday 22nd to Friday 26th July 2013.

 

The conference will be held in the Julian Hodge Building (No 14 on the map)

If you are staying in the city centre it will take about 20 minutes (depending upon where you are located) to walk to the Julian Hodge Building. 

For guests staying in Colum Hall/Aberconway Hall the conference venue is adjacent/opposite

For guests staying in Talybont it will take about 10 minutes to walk to the conference venue

University Accommodation – For those staying at University Accommodation your residences are:

 

Colum Hall (Number 13 on map)/Aberconway Hall (Number 12 on the map)

Reception Office at 130 Colum Road

The flats consist of 8 single en-suite bedrooms with a shared kitchen.  Towels and bed linen are supplied along with a small gift pack on arrival.  Please read the fire evacuation notice in your room.  Also in your room you will find a guest card – please read this for information regarding local facilities, taxi numbers etc.  Tea and coffee making facilities are situated in your room. Towels are changed every 3 days and bed linen once a week.  If there is a problem with your room please let reception know as soon as possible. 

 

On arrival at Colum Hall please report to the reception office at the address below to obtain your keys.

Opening hours are as follows:

Reception is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and closed Saturday/Sunday and Bank Holidays.  Keys are available for collection after 3.00pm.If you will be arriving out of office hours, please used the intercom system situated on the wall or contact security on telephone number +44 (0)29 2087 4444.  You will be welcomed by a member of the conference staff who will issue your keys and assist you to your room.

For residential guests that require parking, a pre booked permit will be issued on arrival and you will be directed to the car park at Colum Drive which is available for your use.  Please note that there are no lifts in the residential building therefore, if you have any special requirements or you require assistance vacating the building in the case of fire alarm activation, please let us know in advance.

 

Departure - On the day you leave please vacate your room by 10.00am and return your key to the reception office at 130 Colum Road.  If the office is closed please post the key through the letterbox or hand it to a member of staff at the registration desk.  Please note that you will be charged £50.00 for a lost key.  Please bring your luggage to the Julian Hodge Building for storage.

 

Talybont (No5 on the attached map)

Please report directly to Southgate House on arrival for key issue. The reception at Talybont (Southgate House) is open from 8.00am until 9.45pm Monday to Friday and keys are available for collection after 3.00pm. On weekends and bank holidays the opening times are 10.00am to 9.45pm.  If you are arriving at any other time please contact us so alternative arrangements can be made. Alternatively please contact Security on arrival on +44 (0)29 2087 4444.

All served in the Julian Hodge Building. If you have any special dietary requirements please make this known to a member of the catering team and ensure that you have communicated this to us in advance of your arrival.  If an accompanying person wishes to join their partner for lunch please let us know in advance an additional charge to you will be made.

Monday 22nd July

Welcome Reception

 

Tuesday 23rd July

TOUR OF WEST WALES AND COAST – Accompanying Persons only
Transport will depart from the Julian Hodge Building at 09.30 promptly (No 14 on the location guide). You will be guided around West Wales and the coast by a qualified tour guide.

We will arrive back in Cardiff at around 17.00-17.30hrs and will drop off guests as follows:
North Road for guests staying at Talybont
Colum Road for guests staying at Colum Hall
Greyfriars Place for guests staying at City Centre Hotels
Please note that lunch is not included in this excursion but guests will have the opportunity to stop somewhere to purchase and eat lunch.

 

Wednesday 24th July

Brecon Mountain Railway and Penderyn Distillery
Transport will depart from the Julian Hodge Building at 13.30pm promptly (No 14 on the location guide). 

We will arrive back in Cardiff at around 17.30hrs dropping off guests as follows:
North Road for guests staying at Talybont accommodation
Colum Road for guests staying at Colum Hall accommodation
Greyfriars Place for guests staying at City Centre Hotels accommodation

Conference Dinner – Welsh Banquet at Cardiff Castle (city centre)
Please arrive at the Castle by 19.30hrs.  A taste of Wales, with the Welsh themed menu and entertainment.  Our banquet will take place in the Interpretation Centre and a member of the Castle staff will direct you from the main gates.  We look forward to welcoming you to what we hope will be a memorable evening.

Thursday 25th July

Tour of Llandaff Cathedral and St Fagans Natural History Museum – Accompanying Persons only

Transport will depart from the Julian Hodge Building at 09.30 promptly (No 14 on the location guide).  T You will be guided by a qualified tour guide.

The tour will last between 3-4 hours and arrive back in Cardiff dropping off guests as follows:
North Road for guests staying at Talybont
Colum Road for guests staying at Colum Hall
Greyfriars Place for guests staying at City Centre Hotels
Please note that lunch is not included in this excursion

Dinner and Social Evening at Aberdare Hall – (No 22 on the location guide)

Please arrive at 19.00hrs.  This will be a good opportunity to unwind, network, or to catch up with friends before we all go back to our busy lives.  A three course dinner with Welsh Lamb as the main course and drinks available at the cash bar.

Presentations - Oral/Workshop
presentations should be brought on either a memory stick or disk.  Please take this along to your designated lecture theatre either during the refreshment break or lunch break.  A technician will be on hand to assist you with loading up. All presentations must be compatible with Microsoft Office 2003.

 

All lecture theatres have VCR/DVD, power point, data projector and are sound enabled.  If anyone needs anything additional please let us know in advance if you haven’t already.

 

Posters – We will provide poster boards in a portrait style (2mtr high x 1 mtr wide).  Please ask at registration for Velcro.  The boards will be numbered and your designated board number is listed in the book of abstracts

Banks and Shops near the conference venue

Banks: There is a branch of the HSBC Bank situated within the Students Union which is opposite the Main University Building. Cash points are also available for Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax and HSBC.

 

Cardiff City Centre - where you will find all the usual shops and banks, is located a 20 minute walk from the Conference Venue.

 

Medical Facilities - The University Health Centre is situated at 47 Park Place, and is open from 9.00am - 4.30pm Monday - Friday.  Please note that the Health Centre is to be used in an Emergency Only.  The Health Centre Telephone Number is +44 (0)29 2087 4819.  Information on local doctors and dental surgeries can be obtained from the Health Centre.  There are trained first aid staff at all locations.
