Intellectual Property and Copyright: Understanding your Rights and the Rights of Others

1/2 days

This half-day workshop explores both your rights and obligations in respect of intellectual property and copyright. ‘Intellectual Property’, ‘Patents’, ‘Spin Outs’, and ‘Technology Transfer’ are all buzzwords you often hear around the University, but what are they really about, how do they arise from your research and does anyone ever get rich from patents at the University? (The answer is yes!). This seminar provides an introductory tour of:

  • the various intellectual property rights available and how they are used in the process of commercialising University inventions;
  • trademarks, design right, the generation of copyright, and copyright law in respect of copying other people’s work;
  • where to access copyright resources;
  • the practical mechanisms of licensing and spin out companies.
