Open Access and Citations: Essential Information for Researchers
2 x 1 hour
Part 1: Citations Count! Understanding and tracking your citations
10:00 - 11:00
Citations and related bibliometric data are now a part of REF for a number of subject areas and are included in a range of measures that are widely used to compare research performance. This presentation will introduce techniques and resources to track your citations and to find and evaluate bibliometric data. We will explore key sources of data (including Web of Science, Scopus and SciVal), measuring citation impact, finding citations to your own work, use of citations in the REF, in League Tables and for benchmarking. Participants will also be given a workbook with examples and databases to explore after the session.
Part 2: Open Access Publishing - requirements for REF submission, your publisher's copyrights and your responsibilities
11:15 - 12:00
You are now required to publish your journal articles in an Open Access format if you have a Research Council (RCUK), Wellcome Trust or Horizon 2020 Grant. HEFCE is also exploring the options for requiring Open Access for publications submitted to the next REF. This session will introduce you to the main information you need about open access publishing, including the different ways of publishing (Gold and Green routes), how to find out your publisher's policies and costs, and financial support available at Cardiff.
Please note - Participants can book for one or both sessions.
