Cardiff University offers access to three Pension Schemes; the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), Cardiff University Pension Fund (CUPF), NHS Scheme (NHS). Existing staff may also be members of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) which is a closed scheme no longer open to new members.

The three different pension schemes are subject to the specific requirements of each scheme and at Cardiff University cover different career pathways;

Universities Superannuation Scheme is available to Senior Staff and staff within the following Career Pathways;

  • Managerial, Professional Specialist Staff (MPSS)
  • Research
  • Teaching and Scholarship
  • Teaching and Research

Staff are automatically deemed members of the relevant pension scheme from commencement of their employment at Cardiff University, unless they have completed the ‘opt out form’ and returned this to HR. A pension scheme provides valuable benefits on retirement as well as life assurance benefits and protection for family members.
