Developing an Academic Career in the Humanities/Social Sciences

This workshop is targeted at late stage PhDs and research staff who are considering academic career and planning to make the move from research student to postdoctoral researcher, more senior research roles or lecturing roles and beyond. It aims to explore these transitions in a practical way and will be facilitated by a careers professional and an experienced member of academic staff. The workshop will include case study input from research and lecturing staff role models.

Through participation, attendees will:

  • understand the landscape of academic careers and the strategic significance of the transition from research
  • to research or lecturing staff;
  • be aware of the main factors for choosing the appropriate academic job for them
  • have an overview of sources of academic job opportunities (including networking)
  • start thinking about  the elements of effective job applications
  • gain insight into the range of skills, knowledge and experience required for the different level of academic posts
