The Military Orders: Politics and Power

The fifth international conference, held at Cardiff University, 3-6 September 2009

Organised by the Cardiff Centre for the Crusades

Conference organising committee (in alphabetical order): Peter Edbury, Helen Nicholson, Denys Pringle and Claire Rees.

This conference was extremely successful. Almost 100 people attended: from Europe, North Africa, Canada and the USA.

The conference was opened at the National Museum Cardiff on the evening of Thursday 3 September by the Prior of the Order of St John in Wales. A keynote lecture by Helen Nicholson, 'The Military Orders in Wales' was followed by a reception and viewing of the new exhibition: 'Medieval Wales: Some Crusade Stories'. On Friday 4 September there was an excursion to Slebech, a former commandery of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in Pembrokeshire, and Pembroke Castle. On Saturday and Sunday around 60 papers were presented by conference delegates, each considering different aspects of the Military Orders' history. There were two further keynote papers: on Saturday afternoon, Karl Borchardt considered 'Politics and Power: Some New Thoughts on the Origins of the Crusades and the Military-Religious Orders', while on Sunday afternoon Victor Mallia-Milanes presented a paper on 'Towards the End of the Order of the Hospital' on the last years of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem on Malta. A volume of the conference papers will be published by Ashgate Publishing. The editor is Peter Edbury, assisted by an editorial committee. The costs of publication are assisted by a grant from the Seven Pillars of Wisdom Trust. For a copy of the submission guidelines, please click here. The papers which have been received to date are currently being assessed by the editorial committee.
