Frequently asked Questions:
Q1. Who can come along on the Graduate Centre trips?
These trips are for enrolled postgraduate students at Cardiff University. A postgraduate student may bring one guest only (who can be an undergraduate or non-student) unless the guests are immediate family members in which case we do not restrict numbers.
Other individuals who are eligible to use the general Graduate Centre facilities (e.g. staff, alumni) may buy tickets in their own right only if any remain unsold on the Wednesday prior to the trip.
The Graduate Centre is funded and staffed to provide a service to postgraduate students and the purpose of the trips is to provide an opportunity for postgraduates to socialise and meet others outside their own school.
Q2. Why do I have to book in advance?
The trips are run on a 'not for profit' basis and the trips must break-even. Coaches must be cancelled at least two weeks before the trip if they will not be used; otherwise the Graduate Centre has to pay for them. Without advance bookings, we would not know until the day whether costs would be covered or not.
Q3. Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
Yes, if you cancel at least two weeks before the trip date, or if there is someone to take your place on the trip. Many trips do develop a waiting list of people who will take up a cancelled place, but there is no guarantee that this will happen. There will be no refunds for cancellations made the day before the trip or for 'no-shows' on the day.
Q4. Why isn't there a special child rate?
The cost of the trip is calculated by dividing the cost of the coach by the number of seats then adding any admission charges. If there was a child rate, all students would be subsidising the children of a few students or the Graduate Centre would have to subsidise the child seats. Children are charged as adults unless the trip includes admission into an attraction where we are able to obtain a child rate ticket.
Q5. Does my child have to have their own seat?
Yes, irrespective of age your child must have their own seat. If your child is under 1.36m in height you must provide and use an appropriate car seat or booster seat. Your child will not be permitted to travel without the use of such a seat.
Q6. How do I pay?
Payment can be made by credit/debit card, cash or cheque payable to CARDIFF UNIVERSITY. If paying by cash exact money is encouraged as change cannot always be given.
Q7. Why isn't there a tour?
Many students want to explore the destination on their own. Organising a tour guide would dramatically increase the cost for all and is not wanted by many. We do give details on where to find information to plan your day and we would strongly encourage you to do so.
