Why Cardiff?

Leaders in research

Dr Sam Evans, Arthritis Research Campaign Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre

We have world-class staff who are making a real difference in the world – from helping to overcome environmental challenges and improving the lives of individuals, to developing our understanding of what it is to be human.

Research is undertaken in all of our academic schools and the vast majority of the University's academic staff are working in areas which are acknowledged by independent assessors as undertaking work of national and international significance. Such research annually earns grants and investments totalling many tens of millions of pounds and attracts to Cardiff top researchers from around the world.

Our undergraduate students are able to study in a vibrant, research-intensive environment and interact with leading scholars in their field. Our research embraces all aspects of the human and natural world.

The university… has an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching and research. Almost 60% of its research is ranked as world-leading and it is a member of the Russell Group of leading research universities. In 2009, the university was awarded its fourth Queen’s Anniversary Prize for excellence in higher education.

The Guardian University Guide 2011

Our health and bioscientific research embraces laboratory science through drug development to major clinical trials - a "bench to bedside" strategy embodied in our flagship Research Institutes. Meanwhile, Cardiff researchers are bringing direct improvements to ecosystems around the globe, and instruments designed here are probing the furthest reaches of space as well as the ocean floor and beneath the earth's crust.

Research into climate change is complemented by work to find sustainable alternatives to industrial processes and energy production, while our computer scientists are delivering innovation in fields such as telecommunications, biodiversity management and engineering design. Cardiff was ranked first in the UK for both social sciences and city and regional planning in the latest assessment. Cardiff experts in these fields, along with colleagues in archaeology, architecture, business, law, politics and the humanities, make up one of the UK's greatest concentrations of expertise on human society.
