Core principles of contextual data

The University’s use of contextual data is guided by the following principles:

1. The model is implemented at institutional level.
2. The model is evidence-based.
3. The model relates to University strategic priorities, taking account of the University’s immediate context and developments at a regional or national level.
4. Contextual data is applied consistently only to supplement the University’s existing entry requirements and selection procedures.
5. The University seeks to maximise the use of reliable and externally validated indicators, wherever possible, to minimise reliance on self-declared or non-validated data.
6. The model focuses on a limited number of measures to ensure that it can be implemented effectively and is readily understood by Admissions Tutors, applicants and the public.
7. The model is explained in clear, unambiguous terms and information is provided in the public domain so that applicants and their advisors know what data is used and how and when it is applied.
8. The model is subject to annual monitoring and review, to evaluate its effectiveness.
9. The model is applied to individual applications; there are no quotas or targets for particular groups or academic programmes.
