School Selection Procedures - Planning and Geography

All applications for a place on any of the Planning and Geography degree programmes must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) application service. Applications can be made either in the English or the Welsh language. We recognise that if you are a Welsh speaker, you may feel more comfortable speaking to a Welsh speaking personal tutor. Provided there are Welsh speaking members of staff available, every effort will be made to allocate a Welsh speaker to you at any point of the application process.

An Admissions Tutor will assess the application and make the selection decision. The applications are assessed throughout the admissions cycle and the offer decision is mainly based on predicted grades and personal statements. After receiving and considering your UCAS application, we may invite you to the School. The School holds Open Days between November and March and applicants are invited to attend one of these. During Open Days presentations are made by the admissions tutor, other academic staff members, and current students of the School, question-and-answer sessions are held, and applicants are shown around the School and the University. There is also a one-to-one discussion which represents an opportunity for the applicant to find out more about the School, and for the School to give more detailed advice about the suitability of the schemes of study to the applicant's needs.

School Selection Criteria

The School aims to select individuals who meet or exceed its pre-determined entry requirements, and have a genuine enthusiasm for the subject that can be demonstrated in either their personal statement, reference or in any relevant work experience they may have undertaken.

The School will follow its Equality and Diversity Policy and that of Cardiff University throughout the School's selection process.

The School believes that the educational experience it offers depends not only on its learning facilities and the quality of its academic staff, but also on interaction among its students. Accordingly, every effort is made to ensure that students admitted are of a high calibre and represent a diversity of social, economic and cultural backgrounds. This includes the recruitment of non-British students.

Students will only be admitted who have competence in the English language, the medium of tuition. Students who are not native English speakers or who have not been educated through the medium of English must display a level of competence equivalent to at least a score of 580/237 on TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS.

Students with disabilities or specific needs are welcome, and applicants are judged on academic and motivational issues alone. The School will take reasonable steps to accommodate needs at each stage of the selection process, subject to disclosure.

All suitable applicants who are eligible for additional consideration and are predicted a minimum of grades BCC will be guaranteed a typical offer on the School of Planning and Geography undergraduate courses. Typical offers can be found here.
