Entry Requirements - Optometry

Minimum Entry Requirements

Students applying to read the BSc Optometry course are expected to have achieved one of the following:

A-level
  • Passes in three subjects at Advanced Level. At least two subjects would normally be chosen from Biology, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry. As a guide, a typical offer on an A-Level based application would be AAA.
Welsh Baccalaureate
  • B510 BSc Optometry: Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma with a pass in the Core and grades AA in GCE A-level Biology and another A-level science subject, to be chosen from Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry.
  • B511 BSc/Opt4 Optomtery with a preliminary year (4 years): Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma with a pass in the Core and grades AA in GCE A-levels.
Other qualifications
  • A previous degree, preferably in a health-related subject (e.g. pharmacy). As a guide, a typical offer on a previous degree based application would be the achievement of a 2:1 degree honours classification (or equivalent).
  • A professional qualification, preferably in a health-related subject (e.g. a dispensing optician registration such as FBDO). As a guide, a typical offer on a professional qualification based application would be the achievement of registered or chartered status with the profession’s accrediting body.
  • Other qualifications. The School recognises that not all applicants fit into these three standard application routes, and welcomes applications with non-standard qualifications such as an International Baccalaureate or Foundation Degree pass.

In addition, all applicants are required to have GCSE Maths at Grade C and an English Language qualification at a minimum Grade C GCSE level (preferred), or an equivalent qualification.

English Language Qualifications

In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, competence in the English language is also a criterion of admission.

There are no specific additional requirements for admission.

Resit Candidates

The Cardiff School of Optometry and Vision Sciences will consider resit candidates on an individual basis.
