School Selection Procedures - Mathematics

All applications for a place on any of the Mathematics degree programmes must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) application service. Applications can be made either in the English or the Welsh language. We recognise that if you are a Welsh speaker, you may feel more comfortable speaking to a Welsh speaking member of staff. Provided there are Welsh speaking members of staff available, every effort will be made to allocate a Welsh speaker to you at any point of the application process, and you would be allocated a Welsh speaking personal tutor during your degree.

All UCAS applications are read independently by two members of the Admissions Team. Achieved grades form the basis of the decision-making process. Offers are made to all applicants whose UCAS forms show evidence of their capacity or potential to benefit from our degree programmes. The Personal Statement is used to identify any exceptional circumstances that may need to be taken into account.

Applicants who are to be made an offer are normally invited to join us on one of our Visit Days. Invitations are normally sent out within four weeks of the Admissions Tutors receiving the UCAS form. The visit normally includes an informal discussion with a Mathematics lecturer that enables applicants to raise any questions they may have and allow us the opportunity of finding out more about your interests and ambitions. This discussion has no bearing on the offer given to applicants and does not form part of the selection process.

The visit also includes a guided tour of the School and the University campus, allowing applicants to see facilities such as the library and Students' Union. Applicants also have the opportunity to talk to present students and find out what life as a Mathematics student is really like. If the dates we suggest for the visit are inconvenient, an alternative date can usually be arranged. If an applicant chooses not to attend or is unable to attend, this will not affect their offer or likelihood of receiving an offer.

If a large number of applications is received, it may not be possible to offer discussions with lecturers to all applicants, particularly in the later stages of the admissions cycle. In this situation some applicants will be invited to visit the School without having an informal discussion. This will have no effect on the offer received.

Confirmation of a Place

The examination results of applicants taking standard qualifications, who are holding conditional offers are transmitted electronically by UCAS to Cardiff University and the Admissions Office will review grades obtained. Applicants who have met the terms of their offer will be notified on results day by UCAS, and later in writing by the School of Mathematics. Those who have failed narrowly to meet the terms of their offer are encouraged to contact the Admissions Tutors who will make the decision as to whether the student should be offered a place. UCAS and the Admissions Office will notify the applicant of the decision.

School Selection Criteria

Offers are made to all students who have the potential to meet our asking grades.

We look for evidence of enthusiasm and interest in Mathematics in the personal statement, work experience and reference.

We look for reasoning and problem solving ability in the reference and achieved grades.

Use of Contextual Data

All suitable applicants who are eligible for additional consideration will be guaranteed a typical offer on the School of Mathematics' undergraduate courses. Typical offers can currently be found here.
