Entry Requirements - Journalism, Media & Cultural Studies

Minimum Entry Requirements

We would like to emphasise that the BA is an academic, not a vocational or practice-centred degree.

Entry requirements are typically ABB at A-level and a minimum of grade B in GCSE English. Like many other universities, we do not include General Studies A-level grades in our entry requirements. Although there are no specific subject requirements, we would typically expect students to have studied at least one subject in which significant experience of academic essay writing has been gained (e.g. English Literature, History, Government and Politics, Economics, Media Studies, Sociology). Humanities and Social Science A-levels are therefore good preparation for the degree, but we do also welcome applications from Arts and Science students who can demonstrate a genuine interest and motivation to study journalism, media and cultural studies as well as an aptitude for writing and analytical skills that are suited to the challenges of the degree programme. The Welsh Baccalaureate is accepted. Candidates must pass the Core and offer in addition two A-levels (subject advice as above) at grades AA.

International Applicants and Applicants with qualifications from other EU countries

All applicants are also required to have a recognised qualification that demonstrates their English language proficiency. This can either be a GCSE at grade B or above, or IELTS at 7.5 or above. For all other English language qualifications, please enquire directly by emailing: jomec-ba@cf.ac.uk.

Entry requirements for applicants taking the International Baccalaureate are typically 33 or above. Entry requirements for applicants taking the European Baccalaureate are typically 80% or above.

Students with other qualifications or experience

We welcome applications from mature students. Mature applicants are not always subject to our standard entry requirement- a number of students join us with Open University or Access qualifications, and we are involved in promoting these alternative routes for admission. We consider each application individually, assessing motivation for study and work experience, as well as any formal qualifications.

Use of Contextual Admissions Data

We will not use contextual admissions data in our admissions process during the 2012 entry admissions cycle.

Additional Requirements for Admission

There are no specific additional requirements for admission.

Resit Candidates

Resit candidates will be considered on an individual basis.
