Entry Requirements - European Studies

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applications are considered from candidates offering a range of qualifications.

Language Beginners

Applicants who have not studied the language previously are welcomed on both the German, Spanish and Italian degree programmes. Grade B or above in another foreign language at A Level is normally required.

Standard offers for candidates with A-levels
  • European Union Studies with French: ABB (with A in French)
  • European Union Studies with Spanish/ Italian/ German BBB (to include a modern foreign language)
  • French: ABB (A in French)
  • German: BBB (B in a modern foreign language)
  • Spanish: BBB (B in a modern foreign language)
  • Italian: BBB (B in a modern foreign language)
  • Politics: AAB
  • Cardiff- Bordeaux Joint Degree/ Diploma: ABB (A in French plus interview)

General Studies A-Level is not accepted.
Critical Thinking A-Level is accepted.

For Politics, all A-Level subjects are weighed equally, except for General Studies.
For European Union Studies, you may study either one or two languages.

Entry requirements for joint honours degree programmes

Standard offers for candidates with Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma (WBAD)
  • WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades AB (with A in French)
  • European Union Studies with Spanish/ Italian/ German:
    WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades BB (to include a modern foreign language)
  • French: WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades AB (A in French)
  • German: WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades BB (B in a modern foreign language)
  • Spanish: WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades BB (B in a modern foreign language)
  • Italian: WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades BB (B in a modern foreign language)
  • Politics: WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades AA
  • Cardiff- Bordeaux Joint Degree/ Diploma:
    WBAD with pass in the Core and GCE A-level grades AB (A in French plus interview)

General Studies A Level is not accepted.
Critical Thinking A Level is accepted.

Resit applicants are accepted and will be considered on an individual basis.
