School Selection Procedures - Engineering

The Admissions process is led by the Academic Head of Undergraduate Admissions and the Undergraduate Admissions Tutors with administrative help from the Admissions Office and the Publicity, Marketing and Recruitment Manager. All members of academic staff are involved in the interview process on a rota basis.

All applications for a place on any of the Engineering degree programmes must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) application service. Applications can be made either in the English or the Welsh language. We recognise that if you are a Welsh speaker, you may feel more comfortable speaking to a Welsh speaking personal tutor. Provided there are Welsh speaking members of staff available, every effort will be made to allocate a Welsh speaker to you at any point of the application process.

Stage 1 – Offer

All UCAS forms are treated equally during the selection process. Applicants to the School of Engineering are normally measured on their academic potential using predicted grades. There is an agreed academic standard for entry which applicants are required to achieve which will normally be measured by the GCE A- level grades or equivalents outlined in the attached appendix.

However, the School reserves the right to interview applicants to allow the applicant the opportunity to reinforce or to clarify their application in relation to their academic ability. The interview provides an opportunity for applicants to view the School, meet staff and students and learn about the city and the university. The interview allows the School to obtain a more inclusive picture of the applicant and their potential.

The process for overseas applicants is based on that of the UK/EU applicants. They are invited for interview if they are based within the UK and are within travelling distance. If not, then the decision is made on the basis of their UCAS application.

Stage 2 - Entry

Applicants achieving the required offer grades will automatically secure a place. For those applicants who have not met the offer grades, the School will then accept applicants based on the highest acceptable achieved grades until the School’s entry target is met.

School Selection Criteria

Applicants to the School of Engineering are normally measured on their academic potential using predicted grades, along with their enthusiasm for the subject which should be demonstrated in their personal statement, relevant work experience and references.

Use of Contextual Data

All suitable applicants who are eligible for additional consideration and are predicted a minimum of grades BCC will be guaranteed an interview for the School of Engineering undergraduate courses. Typical offers can be found here.

Admissions Tests

Cardiff School of Engineering does not have any standardised admissions test requirements.

Selection Interviews
