School Selection Procedures - Computer Science & Informatics

All applications for a place on any of the Computer Science degree programmes must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) application service. Applications can be made either in the English or the Welsh language. We recognise that if you are a Welsh speaker, you may feel more comfortable speaking to a Welsh speaking personal tutor. Provided there are Welsh speaking members of staff available, every effort will be made to allocate a Welsh speaker to you at any point in the application.

The School of Computer Science & Informatics assesses applications throughout the cycle. Each application is assessed by the admissions tutor who makes the decision whether or not to accept an applicant. After we have received and considered your application, we may invite you to visit the School some time during the period November to early March. This will include a guided tour of the School, Students’ Union and campus. You will meet students and staff, providing us with the opportunity of getting to know more about you and enabling you to find out what life is like as a computing student at Cardiff University.

School Selection Criteria

When assessing an application, the Admissions Tutor will consider the following criteria;

1. Could the applicant meet the entry requirements by the proposed enrolment date?
2. Would the applicant be able to cope with the academic requirements of the course?

• What recent study experience does the applicant have?
• What skills/ qualities does the applicant have?

3. Is there evidence of work experience/ reading/ research in this subject area?

• Is there any indication of appropriate career plans?
• Does the applicant articulate the way in which the course follows logically from their previous studies/ experience?

4. Does this applicant show the motivation and personal qualities needed for successful study?

• Is it evident that care has been taken in making the application?
• Does the applicant display the ability to see something through to completion?
• Is there evidence of the ability to work unsupervised?
• Is there evidence of participation in group activities?
• Does the applicant show evidence of extra curricular activity (eg, work experience)?
• Does this applicant display an interest in the course?

Use of Contextual Data

All suitable applicants who are eligible for additional consideration and are predicted a minimum of grades ABB, will be guaranteed a typical offer on the School of Computer Science & Informatics' undergraduate courses. Typical offers can currently be found here.

Admissions Tests

Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics does not have any standardised or additional admissions test requirements.

Selection Interviews

Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics does not routinely interview applicants for its undergraduate programmes. All suitably qualified applicants are invited to visit the School, see the laboratories and talk to members of staff and current students. Those with non-standard qualifications may be invited to discuss their application.
