Cardiff University provides an excellent opportunity for pre-university students holding offers from or applying to Cardiff University, at postgraduate or undergraduate level, to take short courses in English for Academic Purposes.
These summer courses are known as "Pre-sessional" courses.
These courses are highly intensive and designed specifically for students who are going to study at Cardiff University in the Autumn. You will require less improvement in English language for these courses than students who study year round.
The Pre-sessional English Course at Cardiff University is an 8 week or 10 week course undertaken in the summer months prior to September.
It is a full-time, intensive English language programme specifically designed for international students with an offer to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level at Cardiff University.
Successful completion of the Pre-sessional English Course can provide you with the level of English and study skills necessary to meet the requirements of, and participate fully in, your academic subject at Cardiff University.
To progress to your chosen degree, you may need to take the IELTS exam at the end of your course to meet the condition of your offer. For more information see the Progression page.

You can take a course for 10 or 8 weeks depending on your level of English and academic requirements:
Please note that successful completion of a Pre-sessional summer course may not replace your condition of entry. Some offers will require you to take a recognised English language examination, such as IELTS (Academic), at the end of the course. For more information, please check your offer letter or contact your academic department.
The minimum English Language entry requirement for our Pre-sessional courses is IELTS (Academic) 6.0 (with at least 4.0 in all skill areas).
