Welcome to Cardiff!

Many congratulations on gaining your place of study at Cardiff University. The information and documents below contain very important information that you need to know about coming to Cardiff for the English for University Study Programme in 2014. Please read everything carefully and get in touch if you have any questions.

There are 3 stages to enrolment:

  • Online enrolment
  • ID card collection
  • Registration with English Language Programmes

Please note that the last date for enrolment is Thursday 8 May. We will not be able to enrol any student after that date.

Before you arrive

Online enrolment

You will receive an email in April which will tell you how to enrol online for the English for University Study Programme. You should try to do this before you arrive in Cardiff. If you are not able to, do not worry - we will help you to do it when you are here in Cardiff!

Your contact details

It is essential that you tell us of any changes to your correspondence and e-mail address so that we can continue to keep in touch with you during the coming months. It is very important we have your correct details. We will need to send important information to you about joining the course.

If you are already in the UK or have been in the UK recently

If you are already in the UK, you must have the correct visa to enrol at Cardiff University. It is very important that you make sure you have a suitable visa to enrol at Cardiff University. If you are already in the UK, or have already had a Tier 4 student visa, please contact us immediately: elt@cardiff.ac.uk

When you arrive

ID card collection

You must collect your University Identity Card after you have arrived at the University. More information on how to collect your Identity Card will be given to you when you arrive for the course.

Registration with English Language Programmes

You must attend all events on the English for University Study Programme Induction schedule. A copy of the schedule will be available soon.

Enrolment terms and conditions

Enrolment Terms and Conditions

We will give a copy of the ELP Enrolment Terms and Conditions on the first day of your course.

The cheapest way to travel to Cardiff from London Heathrow Airport is by National Express Coach. Coaches leave approximately every hour, with fewer coaches leaving during the night. A single journey from Heathrow to Cardiff is approximately £30 - £45 and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. You can buy your ticket online or at the National Express Booking Office in Heathrow airport. Follow signs for the Central Bus Station from the arrivals into terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4. If you are arriving into terminal 5, check at the information desk. If you will be arriving at Cardiff Airport or Bristol Airport, you can find out about other options for travelling to Cardiff on the International Office travel pages .

If your parents or other members of your family are accompanying you to Cardiff in September you MUST book hotel accommodation for them in Cardiff as soon as possible. For information about travelling to Cardiff please click read this guide:

University Residences

If you told us that you would like to live in University accommodation AND you have an unconditional offer for the English for University Study Programme, you will have received an email from us which tells you how to apply for a place in university residences. Accommodation for English for University Study Programme students will be in the Talybont South residence.

English for University Study Programme students apply for accommodation in a different way to other students. You must follow the instructions in the How to apply for Residences May 2014 EfUS Residences Application document.

Using your computer in University residences

RESLAN is the University’s computer network in halls of residence. To check whether your computer meets the minimum security requirements for use on the University network, please access the Internet with the machine you are bringing with you and click on the link below (note - do this again just before you leave home, to make sure nothing has changed): http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/insrv/it/network/reslan/index.html

If your computer fails the test please make sure you rectify any issues before trying to connect to RESLAN, remember it's YOUR responsibility to make sure your machine has anti-virus software installed, is virus-free and is set to receive automatic security updates.

Private accommodation

If you wish to live in private accommodation, please make sure you arrive in Cardiff early to allow yourself enough time to look for and move into a suitable flat or house. You will find it very difficult to do this once the course has started. If you would like any further information regarding private accommodation please email residences@cardiff.ac.uk.

All students need be in Cardiff for the start of Induction Week, Tuesday 6 May 2014. You will need to come to Deri House for the morning of Tuesday 6 May. A full induction schedule will be sent to you soon.During Induction Week there are important meetings to attend, you will take our entry test and you will be able to meet your tutors and other students on the course. You will receive a lot of important information in this week which will help you settle into academic life at Cardiff University, so it is very important that you arrive for the start of induction on Tuesday 6 May 2014.

Compulsory Entry Test

Students are tested with a multiple choice language test, written text and a short interview.

Fee Payment

Come to room 1.11 in Deri House to pay your course fees and discuss your future academic plans. You can do this as soon as your speaking test is completed.

Teaching begins

You will be given more information about your classes on Wednesday morning. Please come to Deri House at 8:45am to collect your teaching timetables.
