Cardiff & Wales

Walking away from the city centre, over the River Taff with the Millennium Stadium on your left, you reach Canton.

Canton is 10-15 minutes walk from the city centre and about 25 minutes walk from the university. There are regular buses to the City Centre as well, only a 5-7 minute ride away.

Key features

  • Residential but lively area, more popular with postgraduates
  • Plenty of green space including the large Bute Park which sits behind Cardiff Castle
  • River Taff flows through; great for walking or running the Taff trail
  • Close to all essential amenities and shops, including Riverside Health Centre, a Boots chemist, supermarkets such as Somerfield and Tesco, banks, numerous restaurants and takeaways; on the doorstep to City Centre
  • Close to the Chapter Arts Centre, which screens independent films, shows art exhibitions and runs classes

Canton is a fun, friendly area with a great community feel with lots of events and activities to keep you busy. It has a less ‘studenty’ feel than Cathays and is popular with postgraduate students.

Canton has a great variety of cafes, shops, public services and bars but also has plenty of green, open spaces. The extensive Bute Park lies alongside the Taff, marking the border between Canton and the city centre. This is joined to the north by Pontcanna fields making it ideal for running, walking, cycling or simply enjoying the outdoors. To the west of Canton you find the smaller Victoria Park which offers walking and running opportunities as well as tennis courts and an outdoor splash pool.

Notable streets

  • Cowbridge Road – a long road that stretches through Canton and houses all the shops you could wish for, including a Tesco, a Somerfield, health food shops and a range of smaller enterprises

Canton offers a great variety of pubs, restaurants and takeaways so you are sure to find something to please your tastebuds.  In addition to these, Canton is home to the unique Chapter Arts Centre which offers a theatre, cinema, gallery, bar, cafes and shop, in addition to running classes such as yoga, dance, drama and photography.
