House Hunting event for UK postgraduates

The 2014 House Hunting event will take place 13th - 15th August.

Online booking is now open and you can book your tickets here!

We're still fine-tuning this year's schedule, but you can take a look at the itinerary for last year below.

House Hunting 500 x 120

Whether you are new to the city or simply starting a new term at Cardiff University, our Postgraduate House Hunting Event can help you settle in.

The Postgraduate House Hunting Event is aimed at new and current Cardiff University postgraduate students who are looking for shared rented accommodation for the next academic year.

The event is specifically aimed at UK/EU students as International students are guaranteed a place in University Halls of Residence.

In just three days, we will guide you through getting to know new housemates whose interests and lifestyles will complement yours, finding accommodation to suit your needs and signing along the dotted line.

The event will also provide you with the opportunity to make new friends among your fellow postgraduates and sample Cardiff’s vibrant social scene!

When is it?

The 2014 House Hunting Event will take place Wednesday 13th - Friday 15th August.

About the event

The House Hunting Event is organised by the Postgraduate Recruitment Office in conjunction with the Graduate Centre and the Students' Union.

We haven't finished perfecting the schedule of activities for this year's event, but you can see last year's itinerary below. This year will be similar, but we're always trying to cram more fun and useful activities in!

  • Morning: Arrival and check-in for accommodation
  • Lunchtime: Registration and welcome pack collection
  • Early Afternoon: Introductory sessions (Househunting 'Nuts and Bolts', different areas of Cardiff, tenancy agreements, finding accommodation to rent)

  • Evening: A buffet dinner and pub quiz (included in the event fee)

Day 2

Day 3

  • Morning: Breakfast and Re-Shuffle opportunity (optional)
  • Throughout the day:
Drop-in clinics with Students Union Advisor to review tenancy agreements
Free time to check out properties available to rent and to organise viewings either on your own or in a group

Please note if you have only booked two nights' accommodation, you will need to vacate your room by 10am. A secure room in the Graduate Centre will be available for you to store your bags after checking out.

Event Fee

Ticket prices range from £10 for the event only (you can arrange your own accommodation) to £75 for an extended package including three nights in a single ensuite bedroom in Cardiff University halls of residence.

Full details of ticket types and how to book are available on our Eventbrite page.

We asked last year's House Hunters if they would recommend the event to others. The result? 100% of respondents said 'YES'!

Booking

Online booking is now open! Book your place on our Eventbrite page.

Prospective PGCE students

Please remember that teaching placements for PGCE students are in and around Cardiff and, for some students, it may be better to locate outside Cardiff for Part 2 of the course (January until the end of May). It therefore may not be advisable for you to enter into a long-term contract with a landlord in August.

Short-term lets

This event is not aimed at students who are seeking short-term lets. Students seeking short-term lets are welcome to attend but you should note that these are usually not released by landlords until end August/beginning of Sept.

The Students' Union Advice & Representation Centre (ARC) maintains a list of private accommodation which is available to rent and which includes those available for short-term let. For further information about short-term letting in Cardiff please contact ARC by email advice@cardiff.ac.uk, phone 029 2078 1410 or visit their website.

Continuing students

Continuing postgraduate students who are looking for shared rented accommodation for the remaining year/s of their postgraduate study at Cardiff University are welcome to attend this event.

When?

Wednesday 13th - Friday 15th August 2014.
