Your First Few Weeks
Where/when do I enrol and get my ID card?
You can begin enrolling as soon as you have been sent an e-mail (or letter), usually sent three weeks before your programme begins, telling you to complete online enrolment via SIMS. Your ID card must be collected in person, at either the Students' Union, or Heath Sports Hall for Heath Park-based students. You must remember to bring with you the appropriate ID. How do I get a Freshers' Wristband?
They're available here from the Students' Union and you'll need to have collected your Student ID Card before you can pick up your Freshers' Wristband.
How do I connect my mobile phone/tablet/laptop to the University wifi network?
To connect to Cardiff University's wireless service, you will first need to register your laptop or wireless device with Information Services. This can either be done online here, at the Julian Hodge Study Centre on Colum Road, The IT Clinic on the first floor of the Students' Union (open 1-3pm Monday to Friday during term time) or any University library. Once your device is registered, you can log in using the username and password you receive during the enrolment process.
Who can help if I can't connect to the internet in my room/on campus?
There are helpdesks in the Julian Hodge Study Centre just off Colum Road, the Students' Union's first floor and on the Student High Street, 41 Park Place. Alternatively there is help available here.
How do I join sports clubs and societies?
You should go to the Freshers Fayres in the Students' Union. Each day is different, so make sure you visit them all. They take place from 10am-4pm in the Great Hall on the first floor between 23rd and 27th September. There is further information on all the 220 clubs and societies here.
Does the University have a mobile app?
Who are the Elected Officers and what do they do?
They are a group of elected students who have taken a year out of their studies to lead the Students' Union. They can help resolve issues with the Union or the University and have a seat on every University committee. They meet regularly with the Senior Management of the University and will get your voice heard.
What if I want to change to a different room in my halls?
The staff at reception in your hall will be able to help.
I need to speak to someone tonight. What's the number for Nightline?
If you're worried, upset or stressed you can call Nightline on 02920 870555 from 8pm-8am. Nightline is a student-led, confidential listening service which offers emotional support and information for students in Cardiff.
What is the Student High Street?
The Student High Street is our name for Park Place, CF10 3AT. On the Student High Street you'll find the Student Advisory Service, the Students' Union, IT Services and other valuable services to help you out during your time at Cardiff. More information available here
Where are the local places of worship?
Your first stop should be the Cardiff University Multi-Faith Chaplaincy on the Student High Street, 61 and 62 Park Place. They have lots of information on places of worship for all faiths. They also keep information on the various 'quiet rooms' we have dotted around the campus.
How can I get directions to and information about my halls of residence?

Where are the libraries?
If you go on m.cardiff.ac.uk on your phone, it will take you to your nearest library. Alternatively, there is information here.
Where are the gyms?
If you go on m.cardiff.ac.uk on your phone, it will take you to your nearest gym. Alternatively, there is information here.
Where can I register with a GP or dentist?
You can find information here or call in at the University's Occupational Health Centre on the Student High Street at 47 Park Place.
Does the University or Union sell cheaper computer equipment to students?
The Union has an IT shop which sells a great range of computers, laptops and accessories.
Who is my Personal Tutor?
You will be told who your Personal Tutor is at your School Enrolment.
Who is my Student Academic Rep?
Student Academic Reps are the voice on your course. They feedback and positive or negative issues you may have about your academic experience at Cardiff to a range of different meetings. You can volunteer to be one of our 1,000 Student Academic Reps - look out for talks during induction weeks. Elections will be held in your Schools during October, and once Reps are in post for the year, you can search who yours are here.
I study at the Heath Hospital, what services are available there?
The Student support centre at the Heath is located in Cardigan House, up the stairs and the Students' Union is operated from the 'Heath Hub' in the IV Lounge.
Can the University or Union help me find a part time job?
On the ground floor of the Union you will find the Job Shop. They will be able to help find you work in the Union, University or further afield. More information here.
Who can I go to if I'm experiencing problems with money or student loans?
If you're experiencing any problems with your finances you can visit the Student Support Centre on the Student High Street at 50 Park Place or in Cardigan House at the Heath Hospital. Or you can visit the Advice and Representation Centre at the Students' Union.
For help and advice with your student loan or a student loan company you should go to the 4th Floor of the Students' Union from 16 September – 3 October where the enrolment team will be happy to help you. After this time you can call 02920 876211 or email email@example.com
Where/when can I get a council tax certificate?
All students are automatically sent a council tax certificate via post during the week of 7th October. Should your council tax certificate not arrive during this period, request a replacement through SIMS Online or contact Registry and Academic Services at firstname.lastname@example.org (Phone: +44 (0)29 2087 4404) to ask for a 'Proof of Enrolment' letter.
My bank wants a letter from the University, how do I get them one?
Go to the 4th Floor of the Students' Union from 16 September – 3 October where the enrolment team will be happy to help you. You can do this at the same time as collecting your Student ID Card. After this time you can call 02920 876211 or email email@example.com
