Who can join the In-sessional Open Access Programme?

The programme is open to all full-fee paying international students. If space is available, European and exchange students are able to join the programme.

How much does it cost?

All students who choose to join the programme pay an administration fee of £25 per semester. EU students are also required to pay a contribution towards course costs (£25 per five-week course, £50 per ten-week course and £5 for the single Oral Presentation Skills workshops).

The administration fee is not refundable.

How do I join the Open Access Programme?

Come along, as soon as you can, to the appropriate In-sessional enrolment meeting and bring payment with you (either cash or a cheque made payable to Cardiff University). Once you have filled in an enrolment form and paid, we will give you a green information sheet confirming that you have joined the programme. You will need to take this sheet to classes as it is your proof that you can attend In-sessional courses during that semester.

How do I enrol for the classes I want to take?

At the In-sessional enrolment meeting, we will ask you which classes you want to take in the first five weeks (the first block) and the second five weeks (the second block), and will then tell you whether there is space available. If you are told that you can attend the course, please do the following:

5 week courses What to do
  • Pronunciation
  • Seminar Skills
  • Listening and Note taking
  • Reading Strategies

Go directly to the class. Look at the Open Access timetable to find out when & where classes take place.

Take your green enrolment form with you.

10-week courses What to do
  • Academic Writing

Tuesday class:  Go to the room on the timetable.

Wednesday class:  Go to Deri House.  In week 1, you will complete a short test. Your In-sessional teachers will tell you which class is more suitable for your needs and which room to go to the following weeks.

Take your green enrolment form with you.

One-off 2hr  workshops What to do
  • Oral Presentation Skills
To enrol for one of these 2-hour sessions, please go to Reception at Deri House, 2-4 Park Grove to book.
What happens if the class is full?

If there is no space in the class at the time of your enrolment, we will put your name on a waiting list and will contact you if a place becomes available.

Is it possible to change classes half way through a course?

Once you have started attending a class, it is not possible to change. Pronunciation, Seminar Skills, Listening & Note taking, Language Improvement and Reading Strategies run for five weeks and are then repeated, so you will be able to select different classes for the second five-week block of courses.

How many classes can I take?

You can take a maximum of two classes in each five-week block, plus Oral Presentation Skills. You will probably find that you don’t have time to attend any more!

What happens at the end of the first block?

We will email all In-sessional students towards the end of the first block and ask you to confirm your choice of classes for the second block.

What  happens at the end of the Autumn Semester?

When the courses finish, you can decide whether or not you would like to join the In-sessional programme again in the Spring Semester. You will need to attend another enrolment meeting in January and pay the £25 administration fee again. Further information is available on our website: www.cardiff.ac.uk/elt/openaccess

What do I need to know about the one-to-one tutorials?

Students who have joined the In-sessional programme (and are attending an Academic Writing class) can attend a maximum of three, twenty-minute one-to-one tutorials per semester. These tutorials can be booked with your Academic Writing tutor. You should bring a piece of your written work with you to tutorials.

There will also be some opportunities to attend one-to-one tutorials on Friday afternoons between 13.00 and 16.00. These will take place in the Students' Union on the top floor (classroom to be confirmed) and will be advertised on the University's electronic notice board.

Students will be able to sign for one 25-minute appointment when they arrive on the day. The appointments will work on a "first-come first-served" basis.

Please note…

All classes operate on a 'first-come, first-served' basis. A minimum of four students is required per class (except for Oral Presentation Skills and one-to-one tutorials).
