FCF eligibility
To apply to the Financial Contingency Fund you must be a home student studying full or part-time (50% of full-time) on an Undergraduate or Postgraduate (Higher Education) course. A student must have taken out all other funding open to them before applying to the fund.
Additionally:
- Undergraduates and PGCE students must have applied for the maximum student loan and grants they are eligible for and must provide evidence of receipt of this. In our calculation we will include the prescribed parental contribution. Where parents are unable to make their assessed parental contribution e.g. IVA, students should provide details and supporting evidence in case this can be taken in to account in the assessment. Maintenance loans and grants for living costs will not be disregarded if the student has used part or all for tuition fees. A tuition fee loan is available to first degree undergraduate students
- Postgraduate students need to show they have enough funds in place at the start of their course to pay for their tuition fees in full and also their basic living costs for the duration of their course. This can also include those who are writing up a thesis for a maximum 6 months from the end date of their course registration.
- Students from the School of Lifelong Learning (Learn) studying between 12-59 credits on a single course who have little or no experience of Higher Education can apply for help with fees for one Taster module. Assistance may also be available towards costs of travel and books. This assistance is means tested.
- The Financial Contingency Fund may provide a contribution to fee support for low income eligible Undergraduate part time students where fee support is insufficient to cover their tuition fee and prevents a student from accessing and remaining in Higher Education.
- Students can apply for help towards payment of their Dyslexia diagnostic test. Applications are available from the Dyslexia service if carried out by Cardiff University or the Financial Support team if being assessed externally. Assessments are means tested based on a students income.
- Students on leave of absence where it is clear that they have not withdrawn or abandoned their course may apply to the Financial Contingency Fund for help towards minimum living costs. We would expect students normally to return to parental home if possible to reduce their costs. The financial Contingency Fund can not replace grants or loans. We highly recommend students contact our advisory service to discuss possible changes to their funding if planning an interruption of study.
