Participation in a home building project in Bangladesh
Eleanor Earl 2nd year undergraduate Civil and Environmental Engineer and co-president of Engineers without Borders in Cardiff
I had the opportunity to take part in a workshop on building durable hazard resistant homes using traditional materials, cement stabilized mud. The project aim was to transfer skills and technologies developed by the housing and Hazards group to rural home builders in Bangladesh. We built a home and office, using mud bricks, built around an internal bamboo structure resting on brick pad foundations. Without this hands on experience it is almost impossible to understand how building works in such areas.
Update- Since returning I have passed on my experiences to my year group, giving a lecture as apart of a design project, building in developing countries. I have also taken part in Skype conversations with the villagers and builders in Bangladesh.
