Writing a budget can help you keep on top of your finances and this form of planning ensures you know what to expect when it comes to your money. You might find it helpful to keep an eye on your bank balance too and make a habit of looking over your bank statements each month.
NUS card benefits
This is a discount card for students which can give you between 10%-20% discount at a variety of shops, bars and restaurants (up to 50% in select retailers) so is really worth looking in to. The Student Union can provide you with advice on how to apply.
Health and fitness
If you’re considering joining a gym, Cardiff University Sport offers a wide range of facilities and classes for fitness, health and wellbeing at excellent student rates. If you are a new or perspective student and have a gym memberships at home, remember to check the terms of their cancellation policy before you leave for University. Some gyms require up 3 month written notice before they will allow you to cancel your membership or you will need to provide evidence of relocation. Each gym can be different and you won’t want this eating in to your first student loan instalment.
Hidden student discount
When paying for any purchase, it’s always worth while to ask the retailer if they can give you student discount. You’ll be surprised at the amount of stores that will do this for you who don’t actually advertise it. You never know, if you don’t ask.
Discount vouchers
If you’re heading out to do your weekly shop or for a friends birthday bite to eat, keep an eye on newspapers for deals or check out websites such as My Vouchers, Groupon, Vouchers Cloud, to name a few. These can offer a variety of deals, savings as well as a bit of inspiration.
Free things to do
Cardiff is a dynamic and vibrant city, the Student Union can keep you up to date on different upcoming social events. There are also handy websites, such as the FREE CARDIFF section of Visit Britain which offers a range of information on free local galleries, museums and festivals.
Store cards
Beware of store cards and their introductory offers, initially these can seem very attractive but they can charge up to 30% interest and quickly become very difficult to manage. Advice and Representation Centre at the Student Union can provide help and guidance on a range on consumer relates issues if you need further advice.
