Increasing Your Income
Correct tax code
If you choose to work over the summer, it’s always worth checking that you are on the correct tax code, to ensure you’re not paying too much. If this is the only time you’ll be working in the year, make sure you fill out a P38(s) form and give it to your employer to declare you are a student so you are not put on an emergency tax code, as this is a pretty steep tax threshold. The HMRC can provide you with further information, as well as guidance on applying for a tax refund if you think you have overpaid.
Mobile phone deal
If you’re near the end of your mobile phone contract you may be able to haggle down your contract cost or ask for a better deal. The Advice and Representation Centre at the Student Union can give advice on a number of consumer related issues if you need assistance or further information on how best to approach this issue.
Getting rid of old stuff
Planning for University or moving house is a good time to do a clear out of any unwanted goods or items you may have. Selling old DVDs, CDs and old books that are just gathering dust is a good way to generate a little extra cash.
Getting paid for your opinion
Keep an eye out for university surveys or schools looking for participants for research studies, there can often be a cash incentive or university related benefit e.g. book vouchers for those who take part.
Work where you shop
If you choose to undertake some part-time work whilst you are studying it could be beneficial for you to seek employment in places you like to shop, you might be able to take advantage of employee discount and other benefits.
University Hardship or Charity Funds
