Visiting research scholars programme
Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and Politics is an inter-disciplinary centre of excellence and one of the largest and most dynamic Schools of its type in the UK. The School enjoys an international reputation in research, and offers specialised PhD supervision in a wide variety of areas.
Our Visiting Scholars Programme offers a welcoming environment in which to engage with existing staff and students, completely free of charge.
Our research is organised around a number of multi-disciplinary Research Units and Centres. The Languages, Cultures & Ideologies (LCI) Research Unit promotes literary and cultural research in French, German, Italian, Hispanic studies, translation studies and critical theory. Current collaborative research projects include work on photography and visual cultures, poetry and translation and the work of Slavoj Žižek. The Political Theory (PT) Research Unit constitutes a concentration of expertise that is unusual in a national context. Current research focuses on the following key themes: international political theory; understanding and responding to pluralism and diversity; and history of political thought. Our European Governance, Identity and Public Policy (EGIPP) Research Unit aims to examine and compare continuity and change in the institutions, politics, policies and societies of leading European states. Here, four conceptual foci predominate: Europeanization, convergence, multi-level governance, and identity formation.
There is a vibrant and intellectually stimulating postgraduate environment within the School. We offer a wide variety of subjects, from literature and translation studies, to international relations, political philosophy and area studies. The School has an exceptionally strong research culture, and the integration of young postgraduate scholars with established researchers with international reputations has meant that the School has been able to develop a dynamic and forward-looking research ethos.
This programme is suitable for students (currently registered for an MPhil or PhD at universities in or outside the UK) and postdoctoral/experienced scholars who wish to conduct research at Cardiff University and participate in the research culture of the School. Applicants for this programme can be invited on a month by month basis or by academic terms. Current students should normally have completed one or two years' doctoral study, and must have the full support of their home institution. The programme, however, may also be suitable for students who wish to prepare themselves for PhD study so please contact us with your proposal.
During their period at Cardiff, researchers will have access to all available facilities, including the following;
- participation in postgraduate workshops, seminars and lectures (on a non-credit basis for PhD students, subject to the consent of the teaching staff)
